Description Packet Details

Beetroot  Golden is something a bit different from the usual red beet. It features an attractive globe shape with orange-yellow roots that turn golden yellow when cooked. Has a sweet taste, fine texture and tender, even when large. Leaves are light green and can be steamed or used raw in mixed salads.

SOW:  March through June

HARVEST:   July through October

WHERE TO SOW:

For early crop sow February in seed trays, pinching a few seeds into 2cm drills.
Harden off and plant out with 10cm between seedlings. For maincrops sow March through June in 2cm drills, again 10cm apart, and thin out to 1 plant when seedlings reach 3cm. A good tip is to water well during dry/hot weather to avoid root going 'woody' and losing sweet flavour.

History: A Victorian variety of beetroot bred by the old American seed house 'Burpee'.

beetroot Golden March 13, 2012
Reviewer: Anonymous Person
I’ve never like Beetroot. I’ve tried to chase the reason why back to some deeply traumatic experience in my childhood involving borsht , with no success. But my husband wanted to try some. I looked on my seed shelf (alphabetical order unlike the books). I found a packet of Italian beetroot and a packet of Burpees Golden . I sowed both varieties in the middle of the dwarf French beans and ignored them.  Just like children you ignore them and they grow up anyway.  When a reasonable size I added both varieties to our Sunday roast. (the beetroot not the children.) My husband thought they were very pleasant, and I had to try some, after all I had grown the things. I loved them. But really loved them. Especially the Golden which weren’t quite as earthy as the Red but slightly sweeter. I think roasting is the key and also slicing small ones raw in salads. I’m now transformed and slightly obsessed by them. This year they have their own space. I can’t wait.
