SOW April and May
HARVEST September and October
TYPE Main crop autumn vegetable
WHERE TO SOW:
Early sowing under glass in trays or modules at 16 °C. Later sowings in a seed bed in shallow drill 1.5cm deep 20cm between rows.
WHAT TO DO NEXT:
Glasshouse sowings should be pricked off into trays 5cm apart as soon as large enough to handle. Thin modules to one seedling per pot/module. Thin outdoor sowings to 10cm apart. Harden off before planting out from mid-May onwards spaced at 45cm apart when the plants are about 15cm tall.
HANDY TIP: If subject to long spells of hot sun, bend a few leaves to protect the growing head from the excess heat as this can cause premature formation of poor curds.
NUTRITIONAL VALUES: A good source of iron and manganese. Contains many healthy antioxidants.
