Cucumber Passandra has been specifically bred to give a high yield of cucumbers which become ready for picking at around 20cm long. These are then perfect picklers. They have no bitter taste and the flesh is perfectly white.
SOW: early Feb to April. Must be sown under glass, ideally at a constant day/night temperature of 25º.
HARVEST: First fruits are ready 10-12 weeks after sowing.
WHERE TO SOW:
A great tip for germination is to fold of piece of damp kitchen paper, and place the seeds on their edge in the bottom of the fold. Then place in a platstic bag in the airing cupboard. Once germinated, transfer to compost and grow on as normal. In general, cucumber prefers well sheltered sites, where the soil is not prone to drying out.
As sooon as seedlings show three true leaves plant on in 15cm pots, and when the plants reach 10cm plant out in final position. When planting in final position, leave a minimum of 40cm between plants if they are climbers, or 75 cm if they are trailers.
A good tip is stagger the planting out the seedlings over several weeks, to spread out your harvest time 12 to 14 weeks after sowing.
