Oregano is an extensively grown culinary herb most often used dried as opposed to fresh leaf. With a sweet, almost spicy flavour it is very popular in pasta and tomato dishes.
SOW: Indoors February - May
HARVEST: May - September
WHERE TO SOW:
Oregano can be sown in your flower beds, in a dedicated herb bed, or in pots on the patio. You can even grow it on your kitchen window sill.
Fill a seed tray to just under the brim with moist compost. Thinly sow seeds over the surface, and then a light sprinkling of compost over the top. Keep in a warm place (15°C to 20°C).
Avoiding direct sunlight, transplant the seedlings to small pots when they are large enough to handle.
After the danger of frost has passed, gradually harden-off plants over several weeks before eventually planting out in final position.
Alternatively, you can just sow seeds straight into pots and keep them on the kitchen window sill - leaves can then be harvested when needed, as soon as seedlings are 4-5 inches tall.
