Herb Sage is a grey-green shrub with oval leaves and purple flowers. Height 30- 60cm. Well known herb used extensively for seasoning.
SOW: Indoors February - April / Outdoors – April - May.
HARVEST young shoots throughout the year.
WHERE TO SOW:
Sowing Indoors - Using a seed tray, fill with compost. Sow seeds thinly across the surface. Cover the seeds with 2mm of compost. Keep moist and cover with either cellophane or the plastic lid to the seed tray.
Maintain temperatures above 13°C. When seedlings are about 5cm transplant into small pots with potting compost, or into a larger tray with each seedling about 10cm apart. Several weeks before planting out, place the seedlings in a shady outdoor sheltered spot to harden off. Keep well watered. Sowing Outdoors - Use a seedbed and give the surface a good rake before sowing thinly. Cover with 1cm of soil and keep well watered. One established, prune the plants severely in autumn to prevent becoming woody. Replace every 3 to 4 years. Harvest young shoots throughout the year. Dry cut in late June, which when tied in bundles can be stored by hanging.
